Biography:
I am a retired public health physician with experience in epidemiological research, teaching, general practice, and health promotion. A major interest is in policies that affect determinants of health and inequalities. I led the UCL team dealing with the Health Survey for England and comparative work across Europe on health examination surveys (EHES); and I initiated a new comparison project (ESARU) across the Americas and the UK. Prior to this, I was the Deputy Director of the London Health Observatory, and led health impact assessments (HIAs) of the London Mayor’s Transport and other strategies. I was P.I. for a multidisciplinary, cross-research council project at UCL, Street Mobility, to develop tools to measure community severance and work with colleagues in Latin American countries to adapt and use these. I chaired the UK Faculty of Public Health’s Health Improvement Committee and sat on the FPH Health Policy Committee; am the theme lead for health of the UCL Transport Institute; am Co-Chair (Science) of the Transport and Health Science Group; and am Founding Editor of the new, award-winning Journal of Transport and Health. I was also very involved nationally in tobacco control for many years.
