Biography:
The scholarship of Dr. Andra le Roux-Kemp centers on the social embeddedness of law and explores the theoretical and practical dynamics of legal change in domestic and global contexts. Her research methodology can be described as comparative and transdisciplinary and considers law as a body of knowledge existing in complex systems, extending across local, international, and structural confines, operating amidst the interplay of many variables, and subject to the influence of knowledge claims from other disciplines and sciences. This approach ultimately allows for a multi-layered understanding of the law and its role in society and goes beyond legal positivism and disciplinary confines. Her primary fields of inquiry are criminal justice as well as medical- and health law. She completed her education and training in a number of disciplines (law, medical anthropology, applied ethics and musicology) in South Africa and Germany, and is now residing in Hong Kong where she is an Assistant Professor at the School of Law, City University of Hong Kong (HKSAR). She also holds the position of Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). She was awarded a Y-rating as a Promising Young Researcher by the National Research Foundation of South Africa.
