This handout from a 1-hour presentation for graduate students presents 50 tips for writing and publishing scientific papers. In addition to reading this handout, AuthorAID community members are welcome to use it in presentations and discussions. -
Intended largely for graduate students and other early-career researchers, this approximately 7-minute video discusses research ethics, including publication ethics. The video is based on the book On Being a Scientist: A Guide to Responsible Conduct in Research (3rd edition). It is from the US National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine.

Intended largely for graduate students and other early-career researchers, On Being a Scientist: A Guide to Responsible Conduct in Research (3rd edition) provides guidance on research ethics, including publication ethics. This small book can be read online. In addition, printed copies and PDF copies can be ordered. The book is a project of the US National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine.

Many of us have difficulty starting to write. This presentation identifies some causes of this difficulty and provides some suggestions for overcoming it.

Here, for use in giving similar workshops, is the plan from a research-communication workshop consisting of 2 full-day sessions 1 week apart. It includes the schedules for the 2 days and the homework assignment for between the 2 sessions. For the main presentations, PowerPoint presentations available in several languages in the AuthorAID Resource Library can be used. At appropriate times in the workshop, participants should analyze and discuss respective sections of papers they brought.

Written as a companion to Editing and Publication: A Training Manual (also in the AuthorAID Resource Library), this handbook provides guidance in planning and giving training courses on science editing and related subjects. It also includes exercises suitable for such courses. The handbook is easy to read.

Intended mainly for "editors and publication officers at research institutes and extension agencies" in developing countries, this easy-to-read manual contains much good advice. The chapters on editing are are especially good; some other parts, such as those on printing and photography, are now out of date, as the technology has changed since the manual appeared in 1991. This manual, published by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), was written by editor Ian Montagnes as part of a training project. It contains many examples from agriculture.
