[From Michelle Yeoman:]
As mentioned in my previous post, each week this series will feature a new sentence that needs editing. Below is a sentence with 1 definite error:
We studied how a transcription factor affect the inflammation response.
Please correct the error, and submit the corrected sentence and any remarks as a comment on this post. I plan to post and discuss the solution next week.
Do you have a sentence that you would like us to consider using as the Sentence of the Week? Please e-mail submissions to Michelle at msyeoman@gmail.com. Submissions should be your own work—don’t nominate a colleague’s writing :).

The main verb should have conformed to the third person singular i.e "affaect' should read "affects".
Thank you

I would rather phrase the sentence thus;
How a transcription factor affects the inflammation response was studied.

We studied how a transcription factor affects the inflammation response.

I think the sentence may be as follow:
"The effect of the transcription factor on the inflammation response has been studied".

The sentence seems to suggest that the study focuses on how the inflammation response behaves with differences in transcription factor.
The sentence also personalizes the study "we studied..."
I would therefore think the correct sentence would read " The effect of transcription factors on inflammation response was studied."

The one definite error is that the verb affect should be written in the simple present tense (affects). But also i think that the sentence should be rephrased as ( this study tried to illustrate the effect of transcription factor on the inflammatory response).
Regards.
Sentence of the Wek #1

The basic error in the sentence is in relation to the main verb. The verb 'affect' should have been in the form that agrees with the third person singular, i.e. 'affects' since the noun 'transition factor' is singular.
Thanks for this opportunity to practice some editing.
