Greetings again from Sri Lanka. As planned, an AuthorAID workshop was held here last week.
The workshop attracted wonderfully diverse attendees. Most obviously, the attendees ranged considerably in age. Some had recently earned their bachelor’s degrees, some were in mid career, and many were in between.
The attendees came from various parts of Sri Lanka. Attendees from different regions networked with one another. Some hope to collaborate on research.
Finally, attendees came from many research fields. Among them were (in alphabetical order) biology, chemistry, engineering, library and information science, performing arts, political science, psychology, and sociology.
More than a few attendees came from the social sciences and humanities. However, my background is largely in the natural sciences and medicine.
Fortunately, I had as a co-facilitator a prominent Sri Lankan social scientist, Professor Kalinga Tudor Silva. Professor Silva added valuable advice on writing in the social sciences and humanities.
Professor Silva also gave a presentation on the research process. It provided excellent context for the workshop. I especially like the last slide, which lists key features of quantitative and qualitative research.
The first 3 days, the workshop focused mainly on writing and publishing journal articles. The presentations from those days now appear in the AuthorAID Resource Library.
The other 2 days, the workshop focused on writing proposals. In my next post, I’ll discuss those days, which had a different co-facilitator. Before then, I’ll add to the Resource Library the materials from those days.
Until later! —Barbara

I am Zahra Azeem,Student of Final year M.B;B.S at King Edward Medical University and also founder and president of Society of Academic And Research Development (SARD). I have a great interest in research and aim to equip myself and my collegues with the training and skill required for research activities. We here in Pakistan lack both training and resources needed for the purpose. I am really impressed by the way Authoraid is helping budding writers.I'll be really delighted if Authoraid could plan a similar workshop for us here in Pakistan too!!

Thanks very much for your interest. Julie Walker, who heads the AuthorAID project, probably can say best whether a similar workshop might be feasible to arrange. If an AuthorAID workshop per se isn't feasible, we probably can at least provide some ideas for arranging a workshop under other auspices or giving a workshop yourselves. Also, we expect to have more and more self-instructional materials available online. Please keep watching!

Its is a surprise invitation from ICES (Iranga and Wasantha) to participate a workshop of this kind in my life. Prof. Barbara, the facilitator, is the right academic to discuss such matter in simple but very consolidated form. The way she handled the sessions and caught the eyes of the participants well and cherished and made an impression in all hearts. She is a model and a true academic. Punctuality is just an example found in the young and dynamic lady in Texas A&M. Our best wishes to her and her family. Prof. Tuder de silva added another dimension with valuable information. Our Ghana professional - Bernard did a wonderful job and guided us to stream in to the simple but realistic world of research. Dr Mahakalanda is strengthen the sessions in last couple of days and he is a practical giant. We are all very fortunate to be with all these facilitators and co facilitators. In addition Chaminda Jayasundara and the IFS grantees are remembered with flowers and fruits for their views and comments. Further more the mixture of participants and their valuable discussions are the cream of the events. I do hope AuthorAID and ICES are commendable for their service and having such excellent workshop for the beginners, mid career researchers. The workshop was organized well and the credits goes to all the organizers, sponsors, facilitator(s) and the participants. Topaz and Tormaline deserves for the best atmosphere.

The slides by Professor Silva are very good.
Many undergraduate students at our University are always asking how research is done and the slides present the process very well. They will be useful for presenting the concept to our students.

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad that Professor Silva's presentation will be useful. We hope also to post other materials about research design. If members of the AuthorAID community have such materials to suggest, I hope they'll let me know. Thanks!
Barbara
Thanks!

As a participant I'd like to thank INASP, Country Coordinator Chaminda, ICES-Kandy (Iranga and Wasantha in specific), Facilitators Prof. Barbara Gastel, Prof. Tudor Silva, and Bernard Appiah too. Last two days of the week was also fascinating with novel ideas of Dr.Makalanda. Finally thanks to all participants who made the time span so wonderful and worthwhile.
