Greetings from Mexico City, where I just finished leading a 3-day workshop on scientific writing.
The workshop was organized by the biological sciences division of the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana Unidad Iztapalapa. It resembled an AuthorAID workshop.
About 100 people attended. Most were postgraduate students in biology, biotechnology, and related fields. I was impressed with the attendees. They had high English levels, asked excellent questions, and made very thoughtful comments.
For this workshop, I had a different type of co-facilitator than I do for AuthorAID workshops. Here’s the story:
A few months ago, I was contacted by a US colleague, Banalata (Bono) Sen. Bono is an editor at the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, and she is in charge of science education and outreach for the journal. She also is an AuthorAID mentor.
Bono said she hoped to give research-writing workshops similar to mine. She therefore asked to observe one of my workshops.
I had planned to give the Mexico City workshop without a co-facilitator. Then it occurred to me: Bono could both observe the workshop and be a co-facilitator. Fortunately, Bono and the workshop organizers in Mexico City liked the idea.
Like the AuthorAID workshop facilitators (who are from the country where the workshop is given), Bono added comments during lectures and helped answer questions during small-group sessions. Her experience as an editor at a journal was very useful in these regards.
Thank you, Bono. And thank you to the workshop organizers in Mexico City. Now I look forward to heading home.

Dear Shahzad Ali Khan:
Thank you for message. I'll be pleased to work with you in organizing a scientific-writing workshop in Islamabad. If I'm not available to lead the workshop myself, I'll be glad to help identify other possible candidates.
To others who read this reply: There seems to be increasing demand for AuthorAID-like workshops, and I'll try to help meet this demand. When I can't give workshops myself, I hope to suggest other possible leaders; in keeping with the AuthorAID approach, I'll continue "training trainers". Also, if two or more groups in a region want workshops, perhaps for efficiency they could be given consecutively. As always, people wanting to give workshops are welcome to use materials from the AuthorAID resource library.
All best,
Barbara

AuthorAID is supported through Sida and the PERii programme at INASP and we support a limited number of workshops in our partner countries and with our project partners. Unfortunately, we are not able to support all workshop requests, but we are working hard to extend the reach of our workshops through creating training materials, providing example syllabi and using a cascading workshop methodology. If you would like more information about the countries INASP works in and the support we can offer, please visit the INASP website: www.inasp.info

Dear Barbara Gastel
Is there a chance to conduct one "Scientific Writing" workshop here in Islamabad. We in the Academy are being supported by USAID and funding will not be an issue.
Although there has been quite bad times in the recent past about security issues, we are moving ahead and its getting better day by day.
We need your help in organizing this event here in Islamabad in 2010.
