Are you a student in publishing, library or information science, or an early career professional in your first three years of employment in the publishing and information industry? Would you like the opportunity to attend the Society for Scholarly Publishing’s 35th Annual Meeting, in San Francisco June 5-7, 2013. Each year, SSP invites applications for the Annual Meeting Travel Grant program. Applications from beyond North America are especially encouraged, and additional funding for travel is available to support overseas grant winners.

African Sexualities: Theories, Politics, Action Every year since 1994, the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) has organized a Gender Institute which brings together between 12 and 15 researchers for 3 weeks of concentrated debate, experience-sharing and knowledge-building. Initially aimed at promoting widespread awareness of the concept of gender in the social science research community, the institute has subsequently been organized around specific themes designed to strengthen the integration of gender analysis into social science research in Africa and encourage the emergence of a community of researchers versed in the field of gender studies. Deadline The deadline for the submission of applications is 29th March, 2013. Laureates will be informed of the outcome of the selection process by late April 2013. Laureates are expected to use the month of May to carry out their fieldworks and/or collect information to prepare the draft research papers to be presented during the Institute. Each draft research paper should be submitted to CODESRIA not later than 1st June, 2013. Laureates will be expected to work on this document (and not on the abstract of the proposal) and prepare it during the Institute for subsequent publication.

Emerald in association with INASP and the African Engineering Education Association (AEEA) are offering a research grant for an African project in the filed fo engineering research. There will be an award of £2,500 (or currency equivalent) to fund or part-fund the winning research project. Applications should address the creation and dissemination of knowledge for the social good, with a specific orientation toward benefit for Africa. The main member of the research team must originate from Africa or be based at an African Institution.

The American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene 62nd Annual Meeting, November 13-17, 2013. The Annual Meeting is the permier forum for the exchange of scientific advances in tropical medicine and global health. The symposia bring together attendees in a setting where experts discuss concepts and developments on a defined topic of general concern to the global health community. In contrast to scientific sessions, symposia provide a broad synthesisezed review of a given topic, with ample time for discussion among attendees. For groups interested in organizing satellite symposia, those quidelines will be available in early March.

The purpose of this interactive two weeks refresher training is to provide a meta-framework and a step-by-step guide for conducting quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research and discuss exemplars and models on teaching research methodology courses.
Boston, May 6, 2013 – The Elsevier Foundation is seeking new grant proposals for the 2013 New Scholars and Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries programs. The deadline for applications is June 24th 2013. Grants will be awarded in December 2013 and provide one, two and three year awards between US$ 5,000 to US$ 50,000 per year for a total of US$ 100,000. The Elsevier Foundation will accept 1 page applications from May 6th through June 24th via www.elsevierfoundation.org. Forty shortlisted applications will be invited to submit full proposals by September 3rd. The Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries program provides grants to libraries in the developing world to improve access to scientific, technical and medical information. The 2013 program priorities include: professional librarian training enabling librarians to serve as pivotal advocates in their research ecosystems and projects which demonstrate the link between research access, training, usage and health impact. Priorities will also include projects which demonstrate a strong outcomes evaluation and have the potential for a strong model or multiplier effect.

ITU are looking for the next generation of social technopreneurs – young people aged between 18 and 26 with an inspirational ICT-based solution to developmental challenges. Ten winning finalists will be selected to attend ITU Telecom World 2013 in Bangkok, taking part in workshops, pitching sessions, mentoring and networking, plus receiving seed funding of up to USD 10,000 per project. This programme is for scientists who want to develop collaborative research consortia between scientists in sub-Saharan Africa and a research institution in the UK. The overall aim of the scheme is to strengthen the research capacity of universities and research institution in sub-Saharan Africa by supporting the development of sustainable research networks.
