From the CSE Annual Meeting

By Barbara Gastel | May 9, 2009

Greetings again. I’m now back from the Council of Science Editors (CSE) annual meeting. The meeting was in Pittsburgh, a beautiful US city with rivers and hills.

The meeting was excellent, with many interesting sessions and plenty of time to talk informally with colleagues. There were 3 plenary sessions (for everyone to attend), 8 sets of 3 or 4 concurrent sessions, poster presentations, exhibits, and more. To see titles and brief descriptions of the sessions, you can access the program.

If you’d like more information about the sessions: PowerPoint presentations from some sessions will be posted soon on the CSE website. Also, summaries of sessions will appear in Science Editor magazine.

This year, as in other recent years, some editors from developing countries received scholarships to attend the CSE meeting. This year there were 5 scholarship recipients: 4 from Nigeria and 1 from Nepal. I enjoyed hearing the scholarship recipients talk about science editing in their countries.

In a few months, CSE will seek applications for its 2010 annual-meeting scholarships. When the instructions become available, I hope to let you know, in case you or an editor whom you know would like to apply. You can also be watching the CSE website, on which the call for applications will appear.

Now I’m hurrying to finish end-of-semester grading and other work before leaving to give an AuthorAID workshop in Bangladesh.  I hope to send my next blog post while there.

Wishing you a good week—

Barbara
